Prepping Your Home for a New Pup

Bringing a new 4-legged friend home is exciting, but the adjustment period can be challenging.  A little preparation can make those early days and weeks much easier.  Whether you're welcoming a puppy or an older dog, here are a few tips to help you get ready for the big day!

Home Sweet Home

Safety is top of mind when introducing a new dog to the home. Take a walk around the house and look for potential danger zones. Pay attention to electrical cords, cleaning products, chemicals, plants, medications, and food. Remember that larger dogs may be able to reach countertops and tables.  Get into the habit of putting things away in drawers or behind closed doors, out of the reach of curious little paws. That goes for your favorite sneakers, too!

Set up a comfy bed in a spot that will feel secure as your new pet becomes familiar with his surroundings. You may want to consider a crate as dogs often feel safer in a small space. When selecting a crate size, add four inches to your dog's length and height. The pup should be able to stand up, lie down, and turn around. Anything larger may hinder housetraining as he may potty in the crate.

Baby gates are a great way to block off areas designated as no-pup zones. For the first few days, consider keeping your dog in an area where accident cleanup will be easy. Keep fresh water and some blankets or a bed nearby.

Supplies

Don't go crazy with toys and supplies until you get more familiar with your new friend's behaviors. On day one, you'll need quality food and treats, food and water bowls, a soft bed, a collar or harness, and a leash. You can pick up other items as needs arise.

A couple of stuffed toys with squeakers are perfect for homecoming day. Too many toys may be overwhelming as your dog adjusts to his new environment. If your pup seems to be a chewer, look for "indestructible" toys made for aggressive chewers.

Speaking of chewers, we offer a wide variety of 100% natural chews for dogs of all sizes.  From bully sticks to elk antlers and everything in between, we've got you covered. Be sure to check out our best sellers and contact us if you have questions!
